Canadian Gambling Statistics

According to market research from IBISWorld, the Canadian gambling industry is expected to generate around $14.2bn in 2024, with lotteries still dominating. Indeed, in 2023, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation reported revenues of $4.95bn, while the British Columbia Lottery Corporation generated $2.32bn. Unsurprisingly, the provinces generating the most gambling revenue are those with the biggest populations, like Ontario, British Columbia, and Quebec.

The Canadian online gambling market is still relatively small, but growing steadily. According to Statista, in 2024, the market is estimated to be worth around $3.6bn. However, if current trends continue, there will be around 40 million Canadians using online gambling sites by the year 2029, and the market will be worth around $7.9bn.

Interestingly, the same Statista report shows that while average revenue per online casino player has grown significantly since 2017, revenue per online lottery player has tumbled dramatically. This could indicate that lottery players are increasingly switching to slots and other casino games as the Canadian online casino product continues to innovate and improve.

Ontario, which launched Canada’s first fully regulated iGaming market, generated more than $35.5 billion in total wagers and $1.26 billion in Total Gaming Revenue during its first year (fiscal year 2022-23). This was from 46 licensed operators and resulted in almost $230 million of extra revenue for the government.
